What is the Anemometer?

The anemometer, also known as an anemograph, is a meteorological measuring instrument used to determine the speed and force of the wind in real time. However, the anemometer also has the versatility to measure the velocity of all gaseous fluids.

Its inventor was León Battista Alberti, who developed the first version of it during the so-called renaissance in Europe. The first prototypes of the anemometer were considered simple works of art.

What is the Anemometer Used For ?

This instrument is used to measure the strength and speed of the wind; which makes it very beneficial for weather forecasting. Its use has become a prominent ally in a long list of activities ranging from agriculture, fishing and even aircraft flying, including large planes, helicopters and even modern drones.

The anemometer is part of the equipment required in any activity that needs to take advantage of the wind, or in which a certain speed range is necessary, from farms in rural areas to technology centers or airports in urban centers.

Types of Anemometers

In the course of technological and social development, modifications have been made to the original design of the anemometer that have made it more technical and improve its performance; incorporating new measurements in the anemometer.

Some allow to measure an average value of wind speed, while others produce constant data readings of the element. The approach has been to integrate the measurement of elements that add value, and utility, to the current use of the device.

The most widely used and most prominent types of anemometers on the market are as follows.

Push Anemometer

In this type of device, force exerted by the wind on a surface, usually in the shape of a blade, is used to obtain a measurement that is generally arbitrary in direction chosen by the user or operator of the instrument. Their characteristic is that they are, generally, imprecise; although useful for basic wind readings.

Rotation Anemometer

This is usually the most widely used type of anemometer, due to the simplicity of its operation, and it measures the direction and force in the horizontal plane. It uses cups that, when receiving the wind, rotate proportionally to its speed, allowing its speed to be read. This type of anemometer is commonly used in the presence of strong winds, due to its robust composition. The rotating anemometer is prized for its suitability in meteorological studies, as well as by so-called storm chasers.

Hot Wire Anemometer

This device is also known as a thermal anemometer, and it has a wire that can be made of platinum or nickel that is heated by a thermal sensor that maintains a constant temperature. When it receives the wind it cools down, and in order to maintain the temperature the sensor exerts more energy. This increase in sensor energy to maintain temperature is directly related to heat transfer and, at the same time, to wind speed.

Compression Anemometer

This type of instrument works by using a Pitot tube, which consists of a pair of small tubes, one with a front and side hole, to measure dynamic and static pressures respectively. The second tube has a side hole. The pressure differential that occurs in each tube determines the wind speed. This type of anemometer is the one that is usually used in airplanes, since it allows to measure the static and dynamic pressure, and the wind speed.

Sonic Anemometer

This anemometer bases its calculations on the time it takes for a sonic wave to travel a certain distance, which is usually about eight inches. Knowing that speed at which sound propagates depends in turn on speed of the wind, this anemometer allows you to obtain reliable readings. On the other hand, its maintenance is simple, as it has no moving parts. Despite being a useful and reliable instrument, it has a couple of disadvantages, the first is that due to its more sophisticated technology it has a higher cost than most anemometers; and the second is that when making the calculation based on the propagation of sound, its precision declines when there is rain or snowfall.

How Does the Anemometer Work ?

Depending on the type of device used, the anemometer measures the intensity of the air received on its propeller, wire or any other receiver. It then transmits the information to a data analyzer, where the measurements are processed and marked on a digital display or an analog device.

What Does the Anemometer Measure ? Unit of Measurement

An anemometer measures the magnitude of the total velocity, magnitude of velocity in a plane (generally horizontal), or the component of velocity in a given direction.

A well-calibrated, professional anemometer is available with a 1% measurement error. As a rule, the wind speed is measured at a height of ten meters, since the speed at surface level has greater variations that make its measurement erratic, and less reliable.

Many anemometers offer the possibility to choose the units of measurement: ft / min, m / s, MPH, km / h; and even in knots. This ability allows its use to be adapted to different locations and in a variety of applications.
